Thousands of out-of-town students who come to the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, are forced to sleep in university toilets, libraries, offices or residences under renovation at the beginning of the year, claimed the Wits Student Representative Council (SRC) on Sunday.
SRC President Mcebo Dlamini yesterday claimed the council forked out R10 000 on accommodation and food for the stranded students in January. He said students coming from outside Johannesburg to write supplementary exams or appeal their academic expulsion often have no place to stay.
“Our people are living like animals,” he said. “It gets worse every year.”
Dlamini said many of those students had no other option but to sleep in the toilets, libraries, offices, residences under renovation, or clubhouses.
One student, Nicholas Mhlabane, told The Times he was given a chair in the campus restaurant to sleep on.
“I got cramps, no matter what position I tried to sleep in. But I kept reminding myself to be patient,” he said.
In the end Mhlabane was forced to return home to Mpumalanga after he was informed his online application was submitted incorrectly.
