Gulu University lands Olympic sports scholarships from UOC

Gulu University academic staff and students are to undergo free sports management training after entering a partnership with Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC).

The courses, both short term and long term, will be funded by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) under the Olympic Solidarity Programme.

UOC will select the beneficiaries after receiving applications from interested individuals. The courses can be undertaken locally or in foreign institutions.

"Expect me back here soon to work out ways on how to help you benefit from the avaialable sports scholarships," UOC president William Blick said while closing the Fitness Week activities at Gulu University grounds at the weekend. "By successfully hosting this event, you have shown us that you have tremendous interest in sports. We must make sure we take this interest to another level."

Hundreds of Gulu University students were joined by others from neighbouring institutions to participate in the Fitness Week, being staged in Uganda for only the first time to encourage the masses fight lifestyle diseases through exercising.

Fitness instructor Yudah Baluku took the students and other locals through an exhausting but exciting aerobics session before acrobats from Uganda Gymnastics Association exhibited a little bit of sword fighting, fencing and martial arts.

Uganda is in the process of registering a fencing association and the demonstration was seen as an initial move to interest Ugandans in the sport. Coach Yayiro Kasasa oversaw a tag rugby clinic and left Gulu impressed by the abundant talent in the area. Uganda Police also organised a road run around Gulu town which was followed by 100m track sprints.

Organised by the UOC Sports for All Commission, the Fitness Week started in Busia last month and will be concluded on Saturday at St Mary's College, Kisubi.
