President Museveni on Thursday, March 5, named Supreme Court Justice Bart Katureebe as the new substantive Chief Justice, two years after the country went without one.
The news of the new substantive CJ that took the country by surprise was confirmed by the Deputy Press Secretary Ms Linda Nabusayi.
"President Museveni has appointed His Lordship Justice Bart Magunda Katureebe as Chief Justice. Steven Kavuma is Deputy Chief Justice," she said.
Justice Katureebe, 64, who now replaces Justice Benjamin Odoki, had earlier been rejected by President Museveni despite being the favorite candidate by the Judicial Service Commission for the fourth important job in the country. Justice Steven Kavuma had been acting in the position of Chief Justice for the last two years.
According to Ms Nabusayi, Justice Kavuma is the deputy CJ.
Before President Museveni made the decision in July 2013 to reappoint Justice Odoki, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) had recommended Justice Katureebe for the position. It was the single nomination the commission made to the President.
In the July 9, 2013, letter to the JSC chairman, Justice James Ogoola, President Museveni hinted at Justice Katureebe's abilities although he went ahead to nominate Odoki for the job. He wrote: "This is a good proposal because Justice Katureebe is, indeed, very able according to my layman's assessment. As you know, he worked as our Attorney General for a number of years."
