The
Council of Traditional Chiefs of Alaoma Owerri Ebiri in Orlu Local
Government Area of Imo State, has said that for the government of
President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari (retd), to succeed, it must reduce the cost
of governance, strengthen the judiciary, ban unnecessary importation of goods,
encourage industrilaisation, fight corruption and practise true federalism.
Chairman
of the council, Chief Cos Damian, who gave the charge while speaking with
journalists, weekend, said: “If General Buhari fails in this his last bid to
change the country for good, there may not be any hope again for the country
because no other good Nigerian will have the courage, sincerity and patriotic
spirit like him to serve the country.
“Other
areas of life of the country the incoming administration has to pay attention
to are growing indiscipline in the country, refineries that have defied rehabilitation,
power sector that has refused to work, regulating the cost of major contracts
in the country and senseless party politics aimed at amassing wealth, instead
of service to the people.
“The cost
of governance must be drastically reduced if we must make headway in Nigeria,
legislative work should be part time job with work allowance only.
“It has been revealed that Nigeria runs the
costliest government in the whole world, where it is said that the remuneration
of a legislator in Nigeria is higher than that of the President of America
