16-year-old narrates how she was sexually abused in school.

She told Radio 5’s 5 live Investigates programme how she was attacked by a fellow pupil in a storeroom in 2013.

Shannon, from Stirlingshire, bravely waived her right to anonymity to explain: “I said ‘no’ and he pulled me in, shut the door, and started to sexually assault me.”

The 16-year-old boy trapped Shannon in the music department storeroom and took her phone before assaulting her.

He was taken to court and pleaded guilty but initially received an absolute discharge.

The decision sparked anger, with Shannon believing the sentence cast her as a liar and could encourage other potential sex offenders to do the same.

Parents believe that you are safe in school and that nothing bad is going to happen to you, but this changes your whole outlook as to what school is
Brave Shannon
Speaking after the case at Falkirk Sheriff Court, her mother, Suzanne Stark, branded the sentencing “ridiculous” and said the sex attack had made her daughter “quiet” and withdrawn.

On appeal he was put on the sex offenders’ register and given a year’s community service.

Shannon said: “Parents believe that you are safe in school and that nothing bad is going to happen to you, but this changes your whole outlook as to what school is.”

A boy who spoke to the programme, who did not want to be identified, was sexually assaulted by three classmates when he was 15.

He said: “My abusers were the most popular boys in school, they played on all the sports teams.

“The principal at the time tried to put it down to ‘rugby lockerroom banter’ and didn’t seem surprised at all.”
