VINTAGE VENUS OVERPOWERS BENCIC.

Venus Williams was in vintage form on Arthur Ashe Stadium, outshining WTA Rising Star Belinda Bencic to reach the second week of the US Open for the first time since 2010.

The No.12-seeded Bencic was solid - she had 12 winners to 12 unforced errors - but the No.23-seeded Williams was lethal from every wing, ripping more than twice as many winners to unforced errors, 31 to 15, and winning five games in a row from 4-1 down in the second set to close it out, 6-3, 6-4.

"Today I just wanted to be aggressive, which is my style of game," Williams said afterwards.

"She picked her level up, leading a break and pretty poised for her taking the second set, but it's not over 'til it's over. I just tried to play some good service games, get a hold, and you never know."

Bencic was asked in her post-match press conference what the key to the match was - and the always-classy Swiss pointed towards her opponent's strong play. "For sure I think she played very aggressive today," she said. "She served very well. It was very difficult for me to return her serve and put pressure on her. I broke her once, which was a good game, but in other games I didn't have much chance.

"I tried to fight. I tried to hang in there and play my game. But I just didn't have much time to do it against her. I tried to start the rallies but it's very tough when she goes for her shots all the time."

Williams has now won all four of her career meetings against Bencic in straight sets.

"It's hard to remember every match. I remember a couple of them. I don't remember all of them. It was always well contested. Even the first match I played against her, it was well contested," Williams said.

"She was consistent and competitive. I knew it wouldn't be a match that was going to be given to me."

Next up for Williams is another teen, Estonian qualifier Anett Kontaveit, who made it to the second week of a major for the first time in her young career with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 win over Madison Brengle.

"I have no idea how she plays or anything," Williams said.

"I will try to put the ball in the court again!"

Williams and Kontaveit will be playing against each other for the first time.
