Akwa United have one box ticked as they bid to return for the 2016 season a competitive side on the domestic and continental scene.
The club won its first major domestic title, wrapping up the Federation Cup in 2015 but a bigger task is its qualification for the 2016 CAF Confederation Cup and Cooreman’s wealth of experience according to Paul Bassey; a club official, fits the ambition of the Promise Keepers.
” Am excited, Baraje (Zachary) had a one year contract and its ended, we thhought that we could step up; I didn’t want a situation where we asked him to become a technical adviser, we wanted a clean slate and thought Maurice Cooreman is the most experienced Nigerian coach alive; if you put experience under parenthesis.
” He’s won it all the League, FA Cup. He’s taken 5 teams to the Africa; 35 matches in all, am very excited. He didn’t take those clubs up like he’s doing with Akwa United, he took Enyimba to the semi finals of the CAF Champions League. If Maurice Cooreman cannot do it no other person can,” Bassey said
” I read recently that Enyimba are looking for another coach even when Kadiri Ikhana helped them win the league, Coaches are hired and fired. The Management of Akwa understand this is big for us, last season we were struggling to escape relegation; we won that cup by the grace of God, so we cannot take chances.
” We’ve gone for a Coach that is very experienced, knowledgeable and technically sound and by the time we recruit 5 or 6 players, Confederation Cup here we come.”
