Chelsea could be liable to pay damages to a former club doctor whose public row with sacked manager Jose Mourinho led to his downfall after the club failed to file its defence on time.
The Premier League club failed to file its side of proceedings to the London South Employment Tribunal by the deadline yesterday and did not ask for an extension, The Times reported.
It means the club is now liable to pay damages to former doctor Eva Carneiro, 42, who may even be reinstated after the sacking of club manager Mourinho yesterday
Chelsea's failure to file a defence before an initial hearing at a tribunal in Croydon on January 6 would effectively give Carnerio victory in her claims for constructive dismissal, breach of contract and sexual discrimination.
Mrs Carneiro's banishing from duties as first team doctor by Mourinho for treating Eden Hazard on the opening day of the season, and her subsequent departure, appear to have been a key factor in the Portuguese's downfall.
He was sacked as Chelsea manager for a second time yesterday as his damaging public row with the club's female doctor came back to haunt him.
The 52-year-old, who famously dubbed himself The Special One, was fired only seven months after winning the Premier League.
