He was charged with assaulting another woman, even with his new role as ambassador against gender violence.
Zambian singer, Clifford Dimba, known as general Kanane, was released from prison after a presidential pardon for a sexual assault conviction.
He was charged with assaulting another woman, even with his new role as ambassador against gender violence.
He was sentenced to 18 years in jail for sexually assaulting a teenage girl of 14-years. Dimba served a year of his sentence before Zambia’s president, Edgar Lungu, pardoned him.
Lungu appointed Dimba as an ambassador for women and children’s rights, according to News24. “As you go out there, I would like to commission you to be a messenger … please don’t let me down,” Lungu said to him in July.
Four days after his release, the singer beat his wife. Zambian newspapers published photographs of the woman’s swollen face.
She did not press charges. Dimba was arrested and charged in October for assaulting another woman in a pub, but was released on bail. Sarah Longwe, chairwoman of Zambia’s Non-Governmental Organization Coordination Council, said: “He should not put his name to someone who has committed a crime like that.”
She criticized the president for pardoning Dimba. Fans of the singer are torn over his treatement of women says reports.
“The appointment was well intended but Kanene is abusing it now. I think the ambassador position needs to be withdrawn immediately and let justice prevail,” said a vendor, Sindy Phiri.
