SERENA’S CONQUEROR HAILED BY BAYERN MUNICH

Angelique Kerber took the unusual step of celebrating her Australian Open win by taking a dip in Melbourne’s Yarra river on Sunday and as she did the most decorated club in Germany football sent a congratulatory message to one of their own.

The German. after beating Serena Williams in the final, made good on a bet after promising she would follow in the footsteps of Jim Courier – winner of the Australian Open in 1992 and 1993 – by taking a swim in the river if she won in Melbourne.

Kerber was born in Bremen to a German mother and Polish father. She is now based in Poland in the small town of Puszczykowo – which has a population of 10,000 – where her grandparents own a tennis centre named after her – Centrum Tenisowe Angie.
The 28-year-old has been a fan of FC Bayern Munich since her childhood, often talking about football with her German compatriots on tour.Read more here
