A Pretoria man has been arrested after he hit his girlfriend with her two-day old baby and then threw the infant on the ground after he asked if he was the father, said Gauteng police on Monday. The newborn was killed after suffering a wound on her forehead.
According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wanda Olivier, the couple got into an argument at their flat in Pretoria West on Sunday. The man apparently asked his girlfriend if he was the child’s father before he proceeded to use the baby as a weapon to attack her.
“He then hit the mother with the baby,” said Olivier.
The couple allegedly left the flat after the incident and walked to a petrol station.
Police were called to the scene and they alerted paramedics who arrived to treat the young patient at 3am this morning.
Best Care ambulance services spokesperson Xander Loubser said the newborn was found wrapped in a towel and drowning in her own vomit.
The mother and child were taken to hospital for treatment, but the baby sadly died.
The man is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court today.
