So as I was taking my evening walk yesterday,
Lost in my thoughts and planing my schedule for the next coming days In my head while walking, I did not know when I saw her
She was pretty, Young, has a baby in her hand and she sell yams by the road but she was crying for no obvious reasons
Her wares were in her front,, I did not see anybody disturbing her or physically assaulting her but obviously something was bothering her in her mind that she could not relate to any one, not even the business colleagues around her
I wanted to go close to know what the problem was that triggered off the tears but on a second thought, we live in a strange world where we mind our business
Her crying face refused to leave my mind all through yesterday evening
Was worried for her and what could be her problem and unfortunately, Nigeria is a society where we wish everything away through prayers and fasting
We are yet to understand the role Psychiatrist and counseling play in a sane society and how they help in fixing our daily struggles and burdens
A friend of mine suffered from Postpartum depression after giving birth to her baby last year
She was nervous and depressed and as usual, the people around her did not understand what she was going through, they recommended seeing a pastor and then praying it off with fasting to boot and all will be well
Thank God, she later visited a Psychiatrist who helped her and set her in the healing road that led to her getting her groove and Mojo back
There is a limit to prayers and fasting can do in our human existence and hustle especially when it concern nervous breakdown
At times, what you need is just some one probaby a profesional to talk to, some body that you will pour all your frustrations to and that person will assuage and calm you down, give you Professional attention and you will be well again
Many a times, we visit our friends and relatives who just lost a loved one and then, we tell them to take heart that God will console them
Even when their heart is hurting and depressed, we believe that God has the magic wand to fix and make the heart whole
Sorry to disappoint you but it does not work that way
We need to encourage our people to go for Mental evaluation, most of us are not mentally Ok and we see it daily play out here on social media.
Another truth is that most Nigerians have Bipolar disorder and they don't know and will never know because our society don't encourage mental evaluation.
How do i know this: About one person in every 100 people in Nigeria has bipolar one disorder at some time in their life according to a medical research. The first episode usually occurs before the age of 30. Research indicates that about one person in every 200 people experiences bipolar two disorder.
Nigerians are dying daily because there is no one to unburden the heart and talk to
Some Nigerians are roaming daily on the street not knowing that they have gone mad because we don't encourage the culture of mental examination.
Nigerian men now think it is cool to assault their partners because we don't go for Anger Management class and counseling.
Our Fathers were angry and mothers depressed without knowing the cause and at times, blaming it on village people and they have succeeded in raising a generation who are angry, depressed and suffer from mental issues and who have taken to alcohol, sex and toys to hide this glaring inadequacies and abnormalities.
Finally Our leaders at all levels need to start making facilities for anger management, healing process and treatment available for Nigerians to access irrespective of class or status
Only If I had the capacity to help that woman I saw crying, Only If
Nigeria, we still have a long way to go.
