EXPERTS DISMANTLE MPIGI CRASH AIRCRAFT

Experts have dismantled an aircraft belonging to Fly Uganda which crash-landed in Kammengo Sub-county in Mpigi district last week.
The exercise was conducted by the company's engineer, Mr Barry King, on Monday afternoon after realising the aircraft could not be repaired at the crash scene.
Mr King, the lead expert, told police the plane crash-landed due to engine failure. He said the engine stopped working while in flight, forcing the emergency landing.
Mr Phillip Mukasa, the Katonga Region police spokesperson, confirmed the plane had been dismantled and taken to Kajjansi Airfield. "After dismantling the plane, it was loaded on a truck and taken to their airbase in Kajjansi. The exercise was conducted by the company's engineer and other technicians," Mr Mukasa said.
Mr Abubaker Mugonza, the civil aviation inspector, concurred it was impossible for engineers to repair the aircraft at the site because it had got serious mechanical faults. "Besides, there is no runway in Butoolo. The company experts agreed to disassemble the aircraft and take it to their airbase," Mugonza said.
The crash
The six-seater viper plane was flying from Mweya in Queen Elizabeth National Park in Kasese District but developed a mechanical fault on the way back to Kajjansi Airbase on Entebbe Road. The plane was being flown by Mr Juan Santos, a Spanish national and had no other person on board. The pilot survived unhurt.
