INSIDE TANZANIA: Kikwete appoints new AG

Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete has appointed George Masaju the east African country's new attorney general to replace Frederick Werema who resigned on December 16 last year over his role in a multi-million dollar energy sector scandal, State House said on Sunday.
A statement issued by State House's directorate of communications said the appointment of the new attorney general was effective on Friday, adding that Mr Masaju will be sworn in by the president on Monday.
Before his new appointment Mr Masaju was deputy attorney general and he had also served as legal advisor to the president, said the statement.
Parliament passed a resolution in November that called for Kikwete to dismiss Werema over the scandal, along with several other top government officials.
The scandal involves the fraudulent payment of $120m in government escrow account to a private company. On December 22, Kikwete sacked his minister for Lands, Housing and Human Settlements Development Anna Tibaijuka over the scandal in the energy sector that has rocked his government
