As Kaduna State launches the 2015 emblem in commemoration of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, ex-service men have decried neglect by the Federal Government following the non-implementation of 20% increment allegedly owed them by the Federal Government.
The Chairman, Nigerian Legion, Kaduna State chapter, Mr. John Tabat, who retired in 1993 as a Corps RSM from Nigerian Army Ordinance Corps, made this known in an interview with journalists in Kaduna, during the launching.
According to him, “We are facing a lot of challenges; a lot of things that rightfully belong to us are not being given to us. We have been suffering, there was an increment of 53% in our pension since 2010, but unfortunately, that money has not being paid to us and later the government gave us 33% and a balance of 20% is yet to be paid which is our only source of livelihood”.
Tabat explained that the main aim of the launching of the emblem and Remembrance Day for the ex-service men was to seek for assistance from the government, individuals, organisations and the general public to support the Nigerian Legion.
“People have made pledges as to what they will donate to the legion but we are still expecting them to redeem their pledges to the benefit of the legion and how the money will be released to us. The state government as well as other army formations in the state have made pledges and they have asked us to meet them in their offices, if they give us the money, we are thankful and if they don’t, we cannot force them”, he said.
