Metro FM DJ Sbu Leope has threatened to take Forbes Africa to court, claiming the magazine published “false and damaging accusations” against him. On Monday Forbes Africa released a statement saying they were investigating legal action after they discovered a fake magazine cover with Leope doing the rounds on social media.
Leope responded in a statement, saying he did not create the magazine cover. He said he noticed it on social media and decided it was “so cool” he had to use it on his own platforms.
“I was honoured that someone would that someone would go to the trouble of creating such an image. I thought it was so cool so I re-tweeted it. I never thought that Forbes Africa or anyone else would react s negatively to it …,” he said.
“We would think that an organisation such as Forbes Africa would know that publishing such false and damaging accusations against prominent members of the public may be considered defamatory and render them liable for damages.”
Leope posted the image to his social media on Sunday with a caption advertising his energy drink, Mofaya: “The most spoken about energy drink in the market. I did warn them last year ukuthi uyeza umlilo. We have the most famous KORKOTI in the game.”
Managing director of Forbes Africa, Chris Bishop, meanwhile said during a radio interview the company took the false cover very seriously.
“The Forbes Africa cover is our crown jewel; our trademark. We guard our cover jealously. People spend their whole lifetimes to get on that cover, and then to see it all over social media with a bogus cover is disheartening.”
