In a not so surprising move, North Kore has decided to ban its citizens from using Instagram. The ‘blacklist’ decision comes after photographs of a hotel fire leaked out of the country despite the government attempts to cover it up North Korea reportedly banned the photo-sharing app in an apparent bid to stop embarrassing news leaking out of the country.
Some people who try to open up their Instagram account on the mobile phone network Koryolink have been shown a message written in English which says:
“Warning! You can’t connect to this website because it’s in blacklist site.”
Instagram users were also shown a similar message in Korean which warned of “harmful content”. Perhaps Kim Jong-Un knows how a foolish Instagram post can impact on your mortgage.
But some observers have suggested the clampdown is linked to a recent hotel blaze which has never been mentioned in state-run media
Internet access in the hermit kingdom of North Korea is limited at best, with only a small, elite group able to access it freely.
