Birdman is coming for Jay Z in court.According to TMZ,
Birdman’s record label Cash Money is suing Hov’s streaming music
service Tidal for $50 million, claiming its streaming of songs from Lil
Wayne’s album “FWA” is illegal. Cash Money claims it has exclusive
rights to Wayne’s music.
In
the lawsuit, obtained by TMZ, Cash Money claims Jay Z’s fledgling
company is now resorting to “a desperate and illegal attempt to save
their struggling streaming service.”
Tidal
claims Cash Money does not have a exclusive lock on Wayne, and that the
rapper specifically gave it the right to stream his music, in return
for part ownership in the company.
Cash
Money begs to differ, and the company quotes portions of its contract
with Lil Wayne in the lawsuit. The contract specifically says Wayne does
not have the power to license his music to anyone else.
Cash
Money also takes the opportunity to dis “FWA,” saying it got “tepid
reviews” and could hurt Cash Money’s attempts to exploit Wayne’s music.
In related news, AP is reporting that Birdman and his newer artist Young Thug
(Jeffrey Williams) are named in the indictment of a man who is accused
of shooting of Wayne's tour bus. Jimmy Winfrey, also known as has been
indicted on charges of aggravated assault and racketeering in that case.
But
he's also been linked to Birdman and Young Thug, as he made calls to
cellphones linked to Williams before and to Birdman after the shooting.
Wayne wasn't hurt in the shooting, which took place outside Atlanta. The
shooting came after Lil Wayne filed a suit, which was later dropped,
alleging that Cash Money Records, owned by Birdman, owed him $8 million.
Young Thug has since been arrested for making "terroristic threats" to an Atlanta mall security guard
