Hmm, one can only wonder if this is a case of Marvin Gaye’s son “smelling himself?”
We say that in light of his – and the other Marvin Gaye siblings’ – successful landmark $7 million “Blurred Lines” judgement against Robin Thicke and Pharrell … because now he’s saying that TV’s hottest show Empire is his idea and he’s planning to sue Lee Daniels and Fox Network.
According to TMZ, Marvin Gaye III is claiming he registered a treatment on a show called Diamonds & Ballads aka Those Sons of Riches! with the Writers Guild of America back in 2010.
He goes on to describe the treatment this way: “a music based ‘Black’ and ‘hip’ version of Dynasty … with a little Sopranos.'” We’re told Gaye shopped the treatment around to TV execs and said it was loosely based on the lives of his legendary family and the Berry Gordy family.
Gaye insists the people in the industry with whom Lee Daniels associates received emails pitching his treatment.
And Gaye feels Daniels unwittingly fessed up in 2014 after Empire hit big, when he said, “I wanted to make a black Dynasty.” He also said it was similar to The Sopranos.
So, is Marvin Gaye III smelling himself or smelling blood and is going in for the kill by filing a lawsuit against Daniels, Fox and “others?”
That would be a big YES, according to his attorney who also passed along this little nugget to TMZ:
“We understand that three things can’t be hidden for long: the Sun, the Moon and the Truth!”
