A one ton, bronze satanic statue was unveiled on 1 August 2015 in Detroit,
Michigan by the Satanic Temple of Detroit. The unveiling caused outrage
among religious groups within the city, most notably Christians.
The statue features the image of Baphomet decorated with the pentagram
often associated with Satanism, and wings extended from his back. He is
seated on a throne with two children beside him, a boy and a girl, looking up
at him solemnly.
The statue cost more than $100 000 (R1.2 million) to make.
“Baphomet contains binary elements symbolizing a reconciliation of opposites,
emblematic of the willingness to embrace, and even celebrate differences,” Jex
Blackmore, who organized the unveiling, told TIME.
Burning Bush International Ministries pastor, Don Shelby, spoke up against the
unveiling, “We are gathered together to stand as one unified voice against this
demonic spirit that is trying to invade our city.” He and fellow Christians were
in attendance as well, protesting the event.
Some protesters made attempts to prohibit the entry of the viewers but were
told by local authorities to stand clear.
An entry ticket cost $25 (R300).
Upon entering the location, attendees were told that the statue was not
present, but moved to an undisclosed location for protective purposes.
Although the statue was unveiled in Detroit, there are plans for the statue to
be relocated to Arkansas State Capitol, next to a statue of the 10
Commandments.
Members of the Satanic Church claim their First Amendment rights need to be
respected as with other citizens.
