Purpose The ICRC is based in Geneva, Switzerland and was founded in 1863. Originally it was a committee of five, which consisted of influential Geneva families called the Geneva society of Public  welfare.

 They came together for a conference and made several  Proposals including; The foundation of national relief societies for wounded soldiers, Neutrality and protection for wounded  Soldiers, The utilization of volunteer forces for relief assistance
on the battlefield and The organization.
