Twitter has confirmed co-founder Jack Dorsey as its permanent chief executive officer (CEO).
Dorsey has played the role of interim CEO for the past three months, since the immediate past Dick Costolo stepped down from the post on July 1.
Even with his position as the chief of the social networking site, Mr Dorsey will remain the head of mobile payments company Square.
Pressure from investors in the company who were unhappy with the firm's user growth is largely believed to have forced Mr Costolo out after five years (since 2010).
The current appointment of Dorsey runs contrary with the company's earlier stance that the chief executive job would be a full-time position, which seemed to exclude Mr Dorsey as long as he continued to run Square.
Square; is a mobile payment company based in San Francisco, California. They offer financial services and merchant services aggregation. The company markets soft and hardware payment platforms including Square Register and Square Reader.
It has since its inception expanded into small business services such as Square Capital, a financing program, and Square Payroll. Square was founded in 2009 by Jack Dorsey (co-founder of twitter, newly appointed CEO) and Jim McKelvey and launched its first app and service in 2010.
