Gender Issue Part 1.

The picture above is for demonstration, the corps members were in the same platoon during their orientation. They are neither husband and wife nor boyfriend and girl friend. Please take note.

Promoting gender issues is now globally seen as a development strategy to help women and men escape poverty, and improve their standard of living. Hence, the attainment of gender equality is not only seen as an end in itself(being a human right issue), but as a prerequisite for achivements of sustainable development.Nigeria, like many other nations in the world, is responding to the clarion call made variously by the United Nations to rid the societies of all forms of discriminations, especially gender-based discriminations and Violence against women, who are half of the human resources waiting to be tapped for development. Gender is the biological make-up of male and female, the attribute with which we are born. It is the culturally and socially constructed roles, responsibilities, previleges, relation and expectations of men and women, boys and girls. Gender role therefore is different tasks, responsibilities and expectatiions that society defines and allocates to men and women, boys and girls. These are not necessarily determined by biological make-up and therefore can change with time and in different situations.
In this direction, society considers female as the weaker sex and tends to ascribe certain roles to them.
We have more on this see you in part2.
