Federal Government of Nigeria increased the price of Premium Motor Spirit otherwise called petrol last week, from N86.50k to N145.00. Many Nigerians seem not to be happy about it and senators are also kicking against it. The House of Representatives has summoned the Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu to appear before it today to explain the rationale behind the adjustment.
The lawmakers who are scheduled to resume on Tuesday after a brief break, will hold a special session where Kachikwu is expected to make a presentation by 12 noon.
Speaker House of Reps, Yakubu Dogara, in his initial reaction to the increment had assured that the House would not allow the Executive to take any action or decision that would further impoverish Nigerians.
The summon is coming even as Majority Leader of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila called for a review of the national minimum wage to cushion the effects of the price hike.
Youth Corps Members are also complaining that the N19,800 monthly allowance from the FG is not enough and schools they are being posted to are not paying them anything, as FG restricted them from serving in places where they would have had something added to their monthly allowance. They spend the allowance on transportation, feeding and paying other bills become difficult for them.
