Jacob Zuma to know corruption appeal fate today

Jacob Zuma and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) will this morning hear the decision of the High Court in Pretoria, as to their application for leave to appeal the ruling to reinstate corruption charges against the president.

The High Court last month ruled that a 2009 decision by NPA head Mokotedi Mpshe, to drop charges against Zuma, was irrational, considering the strong case the state had against the accused.
Following this ruling, NPA head Shaun Abrahams reinstated the corruption charges against Zuma, which stem from the corruption and fraud conviction of controversial businessman, Schabir Shaik.
The NPA appealed the court’s decision and President Zuma followed suit.
If the court rejects Zuma and the NPA’s application to appeal the ruling, it’s likely that they will approach the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) directly.
Criminal charges were brought against Zuma in 2007, concerning allegations that he was involved in a controversial arms deal, and that he used his political influence to help convicted fraudster Schabir Shaik secure contracts.
