In April 1993 I was 27 years old. That month, I was elected the Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly. That same month I saw $50,000 (dollars) for the first time. I was offered that amount as bribe in an envelope at the presidential suite of the Imo concord hotel owerri.
The givers then were a group of businessmen acting at the behest of a former governor then who felt I and my colleagues were after him. I was told to take the money and save the governor. The truth then was that we were not interested in removing the governor but in promoting transparency and accountability. That day was funny. I looked the businessmen in the face and told them I needed that money but I didn't want it. When I thereafter addressed a press conference and exposed the incident, they attempted to kill me and attacked my father's house were I was then staying. It was all about money and it was not funny. It is still all about money in Nigeria and not about people and it is not funny. In Nigeria, leaders are looting everyday and people are dying everywhere and it's not funny. I have often asked whether our leaders are humans or humons as Archbishop Obinna says. Humons are a combination of humans + demons. Why do our leaders steal in billions and trillions.
Can any human finish spending trillions before dying or do their humonity prevent them from realizing that you neither got to heaven or hell with any checkbook? Why do our leaders like to drive around with dozens of empty cars even though they just sit on one seat in one corner in one car. Why do our leaders own houses all over the world even though they only sleep on one bed in one corner of one house? Just recently our legislators and leaders were exposed as the highest paid leaders in the world yet they are the least productive and most corrupt leaders in the world.
Our leaders recently approved life pensions for themselves even though they have stolen enough for several lifetimes. Recently they have approved that girl children who still bath on their stomachs can get married. These humons and their laws and their money are very funny but not funny. God help us humans to save us from these humons. They are not of this world and its not funny.
