Chaos has since reigned on Burundi’s streets and there is still heavy gunfire between Nkurunziza loyalists and the dissident soldiers.
The unrest is in response to Nkurunziza bid to remain in power for a third consecutive term. This is in contravention of the constitution.
According to Eyewitness News, Nkurunziza’s military commander General Prime Niyobango said a coup had been thwarted, but former intelligence head, Major-General Godefroid Niyombare said rebel soldiers have taken control of the government and suspended parliament.
“The masses vigorously and tenaciously reject President Nkurunziza’s third-term mandate. President Pierre Nkurunziza has been relieved of his duties. The government is overthrown,” said Niyombare in a radio broadcast.
The Burundi presidency called the coup “imaginary”.
“It is with regret that we have learned that a group from the armed forces mutinied this morning and declared an imaginary coup.
“This coup attempt has been foiled and that these people, who read the coup announcement on the radio, are being hunted by defence and security forces so that they can be brought to justice.”
