Sixteen police officers have been killed after their helicopter crashed in thick jungle while on operation against one of Colombia’s most powerful drug gangs.
Two others were critically injured when the UH-60 Black Hawk came down in the northwest of the country, Luis Carlos Villegas, the defence minister, said.
The officers were hunting for Dairo Otoniel Usaga, the leader of Colombia’s most violent drug-smuggling gang, the Clan Usuga.
The helicopter is believed to have crashed into a hillside when its pilot became disorientated in low cloud.
